The Weird Way To Uncover Your Subconscious Blocks (That Really Works)
Forget mindset hacks - do this instead
To understand the subconscious mind, one must learn to speak the language of colour.
If that sounds like a quote from some high brow psychologist—soz to disappoint. I came up with it all by myself.
But I am slightly paraphrasing Carl Jung, the high brow psychologist who pioneered the field of colour psychology.
You’ve probably heard all the manifestation goo-roos talking about “rewiring your subconscious beliefs”. But in order to rewire them, first you have to hear what they’re saying.
So you try to guess. You journal. You meditate. You try affirmations, tapping, vision boards… all in the hope of figuring out what’s going on deep inside that noggin of yours.
And if you’re anything like me, you still haven’t got the foggiest.
But here’s what I’ve discovered: your subconscious is speaking.
Loudly. Clearly. Constantly.
But it’s doing it in colour.
Yep, that Mr Jung was on to something. Colour is the native language of your inner world.
It reveals what you really think and feel—beneath the conscious, logical mind, under all the social conditioning.
And once you know how to read it, it’s like opening a Pandora’s box with your name on it—where all your limiting beliefs, negative thoughts and unconscious patterns are exposed the light for you to see and release.
So if you know there’s something wrong but can’t quite put your finger on it, if you’re confused, torn between what you really want and what you should do, or just have that nagging “Why am I like this?” feeling… keep reading.
Why colour is such a powerful psychological tool
First, let’s talk science. Cos this isn’t just woo—it’s rooted in real psychology. Two of the most influential figures in the world of colour psychology, Carl Jung and Max Lüscher, both saw colour as a gateway to the subconscious.
Jung, the OG of shadow work and archetypes, believed that colour was symbolic and archetypal. It showed up in dreams, art, and mythology to reflect our unconscious desires, fears, and truths.
He often used colour in active imagination techniques to help people access buried emotional content and repressed parts of themselves.
To him, colour wasn’t decoration—it was data.
Max Lüscher took things even further. A Swiss psychotherapist, he created the Lüscher Colour Test—a simple but revealing diagnostic tool that used colour preference to assess someone’s emotional state, stress level, and subconscious drives (turns out I have a natural gift for exactly this! More on that further down).
His premise was that our colour choices aren't random. They're driven by our internal condition. Even if we don’t know how we feel, our choices show it.
In other words, when you’re drawn to a colour (or repelled by one), you’re getting a ping straight from your subconscious.
Colour is emotional frequency, not just a pretty visual
Most people think of colour only in terms of style. “What suits me?” “What’s trending?” But energetically speaking, colour is so much more than aesthetics. It’s frequency. It’s emotion. It’s vibration. It’s the language of the soul.
Every colour has a psychological effect:
→ Red activates.
→ Green soothes.
→ Yellow stimulates.
→ Grey neutralises.
These aren’t just poetic ideas—they’re hardwired neurological responses. Your body, mind, and nervous system all respond to colour cues faster than thought.
That’s the magic. Colour bypasses your logical brain and communicates directly with your inner being.
This is what makes colour such an effective way to explore the subconscious (and manifestation tool). It doesn’t require rationalising, overanalysing, or explaining. It just shows you what’s already there.
You don’t need to spend hours trying to figure yourself out. You just need to pay attention to the colours you’re craving (or resisting).
Because they’re trying to tell you something important.
So how do you decode your subconscious with colour?
Here’s where it gets funky. When I do colour readings and consultations, I look at two things:
The colours you’re magnetically drawn to
The colours you’re repelled by or avoid
Each of these reveals something different.
The ones you are drawn to in the moment reveal what you need to call in. They represent unmet needs, subconscious desires, and energetic frequencies your body and soul are craving. You’re instinctively trying to align with them—even if your conscious mind hasn’t caught up yet.
The ones you avoid or just don’t like? That’s where the blocks lie. The shadow. The resistance. They often represent repressed emotions, old stories, or parts of yourself you’ve disowned. (Plot twist: these are the ones that usually hold the key to your next level.)
Here’s an example:
A client came for a reading feeling unsure of her next steps. She was stuck in an unfulfilling clerical role and really wanted to follow her passion for healing work but lacked confidence and was afraid to take the leap.
She was drawn to magenta, red, green and sky blue straight off the bat—a clear sign that her soul wanted her to acknowledge her gifts, take action and grow by expressing her truth.
The colours holding her back? Yellow and black—fear of the unknown. Fear of being seen. Fear of being judged.
Once we brought that into the open she knew what to do. She worked on releasing the fear and used the energy of green to strike a balance between her passion and her day job.
And things shifted fast—bookings and clients came rushing in and she now runs healing sessions on Fridays and weekends, and has hosted several workshops and retreats.
It worked not because of some woo-woo magic but because colour made the unconscious conscious.
What you can do right now
Want to try it for yourself? Here’s a quick exercise to start decoding your own subconscious using colour:
Pick your colours
Look at a full spectrum of colours. Which 2 are you most drawn to right now? Which 2 do you dislike or feel uncomfortable with?Reflect without overthinking
Ask yourself: What do those colours represent emotionally? (Use colour psychology as a guide, or book a reading with me if you’re not sure.)Tune into the message
What might your attraction or aversion be revealing? Are you craving more confidence, peace, freedom, passion? Are you avoiding discomfort, visibility, vulnerability, change?
See how these emotions relate to what you want to create. Once you’re aware of what you need and what’s blocking you, you can set about changing it.
Fade to black…
Colour is one of the few tools that works whether you “believe” in it or not. You don’t need to analyse a dream, read a self-help book, or repeat a mantra 108 times.
Just look at your reactions. Your preferences. Your cravings. Your resistances.
Your colour choices are like emotional X-rays. They reveal the hidden layers—what you’re ready for, what you’re scared of, what you actually need to move forward. And when you know how to interpret that information it’s like switching on your own inner GPS.
So if you’ve been going over and over trying to figure out why you feel blocked, confused, or stuck in a loop it’s time to stop, look and listen.
Colour is your subconscious mind’s way of talking to you. All you gotta do is learn to speak rainbow.

This is really interesting! I avoid black ever since I can remember. I can’t understand why anyone would wear black and white. There’s definitely something there. Are you familiar with the Diamond Logos teachings? I worked with a therapist who has this training and colour played a decisive role in her “essence work”.
Wow! I love bright clear colours, I am really sensitive too to colours that compliment each other, like cools that go together or people wearing something that isn't their skin tone. I can pick the right shade and hue for a spool of cotton. Now I really am not loving muddied colours - yellowed greens or mustard browns. Murky colours. Fascinating.
