The Secret Colour Codes Hidden On Your Plate
What you eat affects more than your physical health
“Eat the rainbow.”
I’m sure you’ve heard this trite little phrase. It’s the sort of thing that gets turned into a glossy Canva’d Instagram post and shared to oblivion as Gen Z ‘health advice’.
But what if it’s actually ancient wisdom disguised as a wellness meme?
Quick story. Someone very close to me was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about 10 years ago. It was rough—a lengthy hospital stay, dangerous weight loss, the whole works.
He’s been managing it pretty well since then, but just last week, he had another flare-up and went straight back to his “safe list” of bland, gut-soothing foods from his dietician.
When he read me the list I couldn’t help notice something fascinating (at least I thought it was!).
They were ALL white foods.
Fish. Chicken. Eggs. Rice. Mashed potato.
Even the little “treats” he’s allowed (because what’s life without whimsy?)—vanilla ice cream and plain Rich Tea biscuits —yep, still ‘white’.
It makes total sense. White is the ultimate reset button. It clears the decks, wipes the slate clean, gives you that blank canvas (should I use any more clichés?) from which to start over.
It’s like pressing ctrl+alt+delete for the body.
Colour is literally decluttering his insides and making space for a fresh start.
Colour Is A Guide—If You’re Paying Attention
Here’s where it gets even more interesting.
Across ancient healing systems—from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to Ayurveda—colour has always been seen as a secret weapon for health and vitality. These traditions teach that the colours we surround ourselves with, wear, and yes, eat, can have a massive impact on our physical, emotional, and energetic wellbeing.
In Chinese medicine, every organ is linked to a colour, an emotion, and an element. The liver is green. The heart? Red. The lungs? White (like a big sigh of relief for your system).
Same goes for the chakra system in Ayurveda—each major energy centre has its own colour, from grounding reds at the root chakra (all about survival and safety) right up to the mystical violets of the crown chakra (spiritual connection and higher wisdom).
Different systems, same core truth:
Colour isn’t random. It’s a language your body already speaks fluently.
And when you pay attention, it becomes a roadmap back to balance.
Why Colour Matters On Your Plate
Food isn’t just calories and macros. It’s energy, frequency, and vibration (just like everything else in this universe)—and colour is one of the biggest clues about what it can do for you.
When you look at your plate, you’re not just seeing an array of random colours. You’re looking at nutrient profiles, healing properties, and subtle energetic qualities just waiting to work their magic.
And if you design your meals according to what your soul needs as well as your body? Ohhh, the benefits are endless.
Here comes the science-y bit.
🍎 Red Foods
Tomatoes, strawberries, beets—they’re packed with antioxidants like lycopene and anthocyanins to support heart health, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation.
Red meat’s in there too—rich in iron, zinc, and B vitamins for energy and stamina. Red connects to the heart in TCM and the bowels and lower body in the chakra system—it’s no coincidence that most root vegetables are red.
🥕 Orange & Yellow Foods
Carrots, mango, sweet potatoes, turmeric, lemons, pineapples. These beauties are immune-boosting, digestion-friendly, and linked to joy, creativity, and personal power.
In Chinese medicine, they nourish the spleen and stomach, while in the chakra system, they light up your sacral and solar plexus centres—hello confidence and zest (cos, lemons—geddit?) for life!
🥬 Green Foods
Greens like spinach, kale, and avocado are your detox squad—rich in chlorophyll, magnesium, and fibre for liver health, immunity, and glowing skin.
In TCM, green is all about the liver (got a hangover? Go for the green juice, not the fry up!), and it governs the heart chakra in Ayurveda, keeping it healthy and open—it’s all about the love, growth, and emotional balance.
🫐 Blue & Purple Foods
Blueberries, blackberries, purple cabbage, eggplants—these vibrant gems are packed with antioxidants for brain health, memory, and reducing inflammation.
In Chinese medicine, they support the kidneys, and in Ayurveda, of course they relate to the neck and head, unblocking your throat chakra, tapping into your third eye and opening up the crown chakra—giving you a clear channel hear your intuition and communicate with the divine.
🤍 White Foods
Garlic, onions, cauliflower, mushrooms—don’t be fooled by their humble looks. These white foods are antibacterial, immune-boosting, and, of course, cleansing.
They’re linked to the lungs and large intestine in TCM, which is all about clarity and purification, and give you a literal breath of fresh air (unless you’ve had too much garlic. Ew.)
Your Body Already Knows What It Needs
Your body isn’t clueless. It knows what it needs—you just need to reconnect and listen.
Ever find yourself craving reds when you’re feeling vulnerable? Or greens after a weekend of partying a little too hard? That’s your body’s natural intelligence, guiding you back to balance.
The problem? Most of us have tuned it out. We eat based on habits, convenience, or TikTok trends—rarely stopping to notice the colour signals our body is throwing at us.
But when you consciously bring colour into your meals (and your life), everything starts to shift. You reconnect with your body’s built-in GPS system—and from there you can heal yourself.
Fade to black…
Food isn’t just about nutrition. It’s a conversation—between you and the universe. Every bite you take can either nourish and heal… or pull you off course.
We are nature and we must return to it. When you start seeing colour as more than just decoration, you unlock its full power as a tool for healing, clarity, and manifesting a life that actually feels good.
Because colour isn’t random. It’s a compass—are you gonna follow its direction?
